X4150: where do I boot from?

Seems my earlier optimism was a tad misplaced. I come back a short time later and the X4150 is sitting there at the interactive prompt you get when doing a network boot. So the install finished just fine but then it booted off the network again.

(See: I knew it was a good thing not to default to install. It could have installed itself over and over in a loop.)

The cause is reasonably obvious - either the drive isn't listed as bootable or the boot order in the BIOS is wrong.

This is where Ben's tip saved me either a bit of fiddling or a walk down to the machine itself.

I get into the BIOS, and the boot order shows me the DVD, the 4 network ports, and the disk I installed to. In that order. OK, I move the disk up and reboot.

Success! We boot off the hard disk.

(There's still an open question here: I want to have all four disks bootable just in case I lose one, and I'll set them up as two sets of mirrors - one for running, and one for live upgrade. I still need to work out how to add the rest.)

I just got my x4150! But I've had a lot of problems with it so far.

1. The DVD didn't go in right, you have to push it in a correct way to get it in. I finally got it in.. maybe with some damage?

2. I got a PCIe SAS HBA. I plug in two disks in slot 0 (and 1) on left side of system (when looking from front of it). The lights of the disks do not work!

Did you see this? The disks are being recognized and work fine, I was able to install OS... but the odd thing is they show up as c0t8. Maybe thats because of the SATA controllers being there? (how do I disable it? BIOS didn't seem to show anything.)

3. After I first installed Solaris u4, it would not boot into 64 bit. I had to boot into 32bit, install latestet recommended patches. Then I was able to boot up into 64bit!

What a mess and what a lot of trouble! Teaches me to never buy a system so brand new so quick. :P

Well, I've never used the DVD. In fact, if it's an option to not have one that's what I normally choose - it saves both money, space, and potentially power.

Hm. My disk lights work - I think.

And my disks show up as c0t0 through c0t3. But they're on one port of the controller - I don't know what IDs would be assigned to the other port on the HBA.

(The SATA controllers would shift them up to c3 or whatever, and wouldn't change the target number.)

I don't remember seeing any 32-bit
issues, but then I never looked.

I got my X4150 server and have no lights on the disks :
-I have 2 disks in 0,1 and i have PCI SAS card installed (SG-PCIE8SAS-I-Z)
-when I boot from Solaris 10 DVD , the system boots and I can install the software with no problem ..after I finish installing the software if i choose Solaris from the boot menu the server will keep rebooting like it can not access the hard drive
-I don't know what the SAS card emulate as no lights in the hard drives means to me no power and Solaris shouldn't be installed but somehow the SAS card telling the system there is hard drives installed ..I am not sure so far ..without seeing lights on the hard drive I can't feel good ...I am waiting Sun hardware people to show up for help but any Suggestion from you will be appreciated

I don't know about the lights on the drives (mine worked, so that's not a problem I've had to solve).

For the rebooting loop, have you gone into the bios and marked the drive(s) as bootable? And that they're first in the boot order?

You have to boot the OS into 32 bit mode and then install one of the later kernel updates. That should make it work for 64 bit. I am assuming you have u4.

For the Disk lights... thats not supported for the SAS controller. I am in the same boat. Its kind of crappy to not see the lights though.

Its a kick ass system though if you don't count these setbacks.

I'm also facing the same problem, how to boot into 32-bit mode, and please advise what patches needs to update before system can boot into 64-bit mode.

Hi

where can i buy a Tribble PCI card to use DMA to get the system memory?

Thank you ever so much in advance.

Well I had never heard of a Tribble PCI card, but for the curious:

and no, I have no affiliation or connection with them, just a coincidence in name. It's not even obvious to me whether this is actually a product or just a concept.

Did you ever get your 4150 to boot off of all of the different disks?
